Some stones captivate at first glance. Labradorite is one of them. Grey and discreet at first sight, it reveals a dazzling spectacle of blue, green, golden and purple reflections under the light—a unique optical phenomenon called labradorescence. A stone for shamans, travelers, and souls searching for meaning, labradorite is one of the most powerful and mysterious stones in lithotherapy.
Origins and Formation
Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar discovered in 1770 on the Labrador Peninsula in Canada—hence its name. It forms in igneous and metamorphic rocks, and its iridescent reflections are due to the diffraction of light on the fine internal layers of its crystalline structure.
It is mainly found in Canada (Labrador), Finland (where the spectacular variety called spectrolite is extracted), Madagascar, Russia, and Australia. Its hardness is 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale.
Labradorescence: A Unique Phenomenon
This spectacular play of light—called labradorescence or Schiller effect—is unique to this stone. Depending on the angle of illumination, labradorite can display deep blues, emerald greens, solar golds, mysterious purples, or even rare reds. Each stone is unique in its reflections.
Properties in Lithotherapy
- Powerful energetic protection: Labradorite is considered one of the best energetic shields. It forms a protective barrier around the aura, preventing energy leaks and negative external intrusions.
- Intuition and clairvoyance: As the stone of the third eye par excellence, it develops intuition, extra-sensory perception, and the ability to read situations in depth.
- Transformation and change: It supports major life transitions with grace and courage. It helps let go of what no longer serves and embrace change as an opportunity.
- Spiritual connection: Used for centuries by shamans and healers, it facilitates meditation, inner journeys, and connection to subtle planes.
- Discernment and lucidity: It helps to see the truth behind appearances, to thwart illusions, and to make decisions aligned with one's deep self.
- Creativity and imagination: It stimulates imagination, artistic inspiration, and original thought. It is a valuable ally for creatives and artists.
- Stress and anxiety management: It soothes obsessive thoughts, calms the agitated mind, and helps to regain a state of deep inner calm.
Associated Chakras

Different Varieties of Labradorite
- Classic Labradorite: grey-green background with blue and gold reflections, the most common and accessible
- Spectrolite (Finland): rare variety with exceptionally intense reflections covering the entire chromatic spectrum, highly sought after
- White Labradorite (Rainbow Moonstone): translucent white background with blue reflections, often confused with moonstone
- Golden Labradorite (Bytownite): golden-yellow hue without labradorescence, rarer
How to Wear Labradorite?
Labradorite is ideally worn:
- As a pendant at the throat or heart level to continuously benefit from its protection and intuitive energy
- As a bracelet for continuous energetic protection throughout the day
- As earrings to stimulate the third eye and refine intuitive perception
It harmoniously pairs with:
- Black onyx for maximum energetic protection
- Amethyst to amplify spiritual connection and intuition
- Moonstone to reinforce intuitive femininity and cycles
- Tiger's eye to balance intuition and grounding in reality
Care and Purification
- Purification: Smudging with white sage, placing on an amethyst or selenite cluster. Avoid prolonged water exposure which could dull its reflections.
- Recharging: Full moon light—it is particularly receptive to lunar energy. Avoid direct sunlight which can alter its iridescent reflections.
- Physical Cleaning: Gently wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemicals, ultrasonics, and prolonged immersion in water.
